For the Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- ¼ cup water
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
- 1½ tablespoon light soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon Chinese cooking wine (Shaoxing wine)
- ⅛ teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the Stir Fry:
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 360 grams beef fillet, or rump steak
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely chopped
- 4-5 cups broccoli florets, about 1 head, cooked
- 1 cup water
Make the sauce: combine cornstarch and water, mix through. Add the remaining ingredients for the sauce. Mix thoroughly.
Slice the beef fillet into strips about 0.5 cm (¼ inch) thick strips. Place the beef strips into a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of the prepared sauce. Set aside.
Heat up the oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the beef strips and fry them for about 1 minutes until golden brown on all sides.
Add the garlic and ginger, mix through and fry for an additional 30 seconds, or until fragrant and meat is no longer pink.
Add the prepared sauce and water to the frying pan, mix through and bring to simmer.
Once the sauce is bubbling, add the cooked broccoli florets to the sauce. Give it mix through, to cover the broccoli in sauce.Cook for an additional 1 minute, or until the sauce has thickened. Remove from heat and serve over cooked rice. You can add some sesame seeds if desired.
Enjoy!
