Doughnuts

Light and fluffy, fried doughnuts are pretty easy to make and can be filled with any desired filling.

My sister recommended me this recipe for fried doughnuts and honestly this was my very first time making doughnuts. And for a first timer, they turned out pretty delicious. The process of making them is not hard, but it does take a bit of time, because you are dealing with a yeast dough, which needs time to rise, in order to become light and puffy.

For starters you need to make the dough: In a large bowl combine warm milk and water. Add all of the sugar and dried yeast and let it stand in a warm place for about 15 minutes. To let the yeast come alive. =)

After 15 minutes, the yeast will look a bit bubbly, means it came alive and you can proceed with making the dough. Add the egg, butter (melted or room temperature), salt and vanilla extract. Whisk everything together until well combined.

Now you can start adding the flour one cup at a time. You might not need all of the flour.

Knead the dough on a floured work space, until it forms a smooth dough that is not too soft or too tough, but at the same time does not stick to your hands. Grease a medium/large mixing bowl with oil, just enough to cover the sides and bottom of the bowl. Place the dough inside, roll it a bit in the oil. Cover the top of the bowl with plastic food wrap or a towel. Place in a warm place and let stand for about 1-1½ hours, or until the dough expands and doubles in size.

Once the dough has doubled in size, take it out of the bowl and knead it for a little bit to make a smooth ball.

Now for the doughnut making process: I did it the following way, take ⅓ of the dough, roll it out on the floured work surface into a circle about 2-2.5 cm in thickness. Then using cookie cutters, a big one and a small one, cut out circular shapes and then with a small cutter, cut out a hole in the middle of each circle.

Another way you can make doughnuts is: take ⅓ of the dough, roll it into a sausage, about 3-4 cm in thickness. Then cut the sausage into even pieces, about 10 pieces. Roll out each piece into a thick sausage, and connect it at the ends. You get a doughnut shape.

Place doughnuts on flat surface and cover with a towel. Allow to stand for about 15-30 minutes, the doughnuts will expand and double in size.

Preheat oil in a deep pan/frying pan/pot, enough oil so the doughnuts are floating in it without touching the bottom.

Once the oil is really hot, carefully lower doughnuts, one at a time, into the oil. Careful the oil will bubble and might spray a bit.

Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Might need more time or less time, depending on your stove and how hot the oil is.

Place the doughnuts on a plate covered with paper towels, to get the extra oil out.

Once all the doughnuts are fried, allow them to cool and they are ready to be eaten.

You can fill the doughnuts with any desired filling.

Enjoy!
