Homemade Molasses Substitute
Very sweet and viscous, this molasses substitute
Servings: 2 cups
Ingredients
- 2 cups (450 grams) dark brown sugar
- ¾ cups water
- ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar or vinegar
- 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Instructions
- In a heavy bottom saucepan, over medium heat, combine sugar, cream of tartar, water and lemon juice.
- Once the sugar dissolved, turn down the heat and simmer the syrup on low heat until it slightly thickens. It will be close to maple syrup consistency, the kind that drips off the spoon slowly, rather than like water. About 3-4 minutes.It will thicken even more and harden as it cools.
- When you need to use it, warm it up again to soften it.
- This molasses substitute will last between 3-4 months in the fridge, in an airtight container or jar.
