Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese cooking wine (Shaoxing wine)
  • teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

For the Stir Fry:

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 360 grams beef fillet, or rump steak
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 4-5 cups broccoli florets, about 1 head, cooked
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Make the sauce: combine cornstarch and water, mix through. Add the remaining ingredients for the sauce. Mix thoroughly.
  • Slice the beef fillet into strips about 0.5 cm (¼ inch) thick strips. Place the beef strips into a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of the prepared sauce. Set aside.
  • Heat up the oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the beef strips and fry them for about 1 minutes until golden brown on all sides.
  • Add the garlic and ginger, mix through and fry for an additional 30 seconds, or until fragrant and meat is no longer pink.
  • Add the prepared sauce and water to the frying pan, mix through and bring to simmer.
  • Once the sauce is bubbling, add the cooked broccoli florets to the sauce. Give it mix through, to cover the broccoli in sauce.
Cook for an additional 1 minute, or until the sauce has thickened.
  • Remove from heat and serve over cooked rice. You can add some sesame seeds if desired.
  • Enjoy!
