Funny Pancakes

Pancakes are loved by everyone, big and small. But why not make it even more fun by adding some color and imagination to a world favorite breakfast dish.

Recently I have prepared some fun pancakes by splitting the batter in half and adding some pink food coloring to one of the halves. With the help of squeeze bottles you can draw shapes with one color and then fill them in with the other. You can add more colors and so on. Let your imagination run wild.

Below you can find a recipe for a classic pancake batter and from there you can use your imagination.

I used squeeze bottles from IKEA, but you can probably find them in your local supermarket or you can find a similar product here.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 3½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  • In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Mix until well combined. Set aside.
  • In another bowl whisk together eggs and milk. Mix in white vinegar until well combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until well combined and there are no lumps.
  • I only used one color, therefore split the batter in half. One half I left as it is, the other half I added 2 drops of red food coloring. Mix in the coloring well, until it's a uniform color.
If you have more squeeze bottles available, you can make more colors, just split the batter accordingly.
Pour the batter into separate squeeze bottles, one color per bottle.
  • Heat up the lightly greased/oiled frying pan or griddle. Once the pan is hot, take it off the heat and start drawing your designs with the available colors.
Then return the pan to the heat and allow to cook on one side, then flip the pancake on the other side.
Your design should now be visible. It took me a couple of tries to get the hearts right and to get used to using the squeeze bottles.
  • Repeat with the remaining batter, creating whatever designs you wish.
  • Serve immediately while the pancakes are still hot. The pancakes go well with anything really, honey, maple syrup, butter, whipped cream, berries, fruits and so on.
Depending on the size of your pancakes, this batter makes about 12 pancakes.
  • Enjoy!
